A educação jesuítica e o Colégio de Santo Antão, de Lisboa, no século XVI

Resumo Com a chegada da Companhia de Jesus a Portugal, em 1540, passam a ser criados pela Coroa os colégios jesuíticos, os quais, posteriormente, abriram-se para além da formação de internos e, assim, tanto os filhos dos pobres quanto os da alta nobreza passaram a compor também o alunado dessas instituições. Temos como objeto de estudo desta dissertação a primeira instituição pública de ensino portuguesa, dirigida pelos jesuítas, o colégio de Santo Antão, o mais respeitado e importante de Lisboa, que teve o início de suas atividades em fevereiro de 1553. A procura pelas matrículas foi grande, o que tornou necessária outra construção, e, em 1593, iniciaram-se no novo ambiente as aulas do que passaria a se chamar colégio de Santo Antão-o-Novo. Assim, nesse contexto, propomos uma breve discussão dos principais objetivos, características e dificuldades da ordem religiosa jesuítica no território português, bem como aspectos quanto à implantação, objetivos iniciais e consolidação do centro de ensino em questão; além disso, fizemos uma apresentação de uma das aulas mais importantes desse colégio: a “Aula da Esfera”. A primeira instituição jesuítica de ensino público cresceu, tornando-se o melhor centro de ciências e astronomia de Portugal. Os padres consideravam fundamentais aos ensinamentos daquele colégio aspectos relacionados à matemática, pois, por meio dessa disciplina, abordavam a teoria e prática de itens como o telescópio, logaritmos, equações, geometria e afins. As grades curriculares desse centro de ensino pré-universitário incluíam, além das ciências e matemática, disciplinas como latim, gramática, humanidades, retórica e introduções à teologia moral, à teologia dogmática e à filosofia, consideradas únicas ao ensino no contexto português. Estudar o colégio de Santo Antão ajuda-nos também a compreender como eram consideradas essas inovações no ensino, especialmente no caso jesuítico, na conjuntura temporal de Portugal no século XVI. Entendemos que o colégio, principalmente pelas inovações com essas disciplinas, foi essencial na modernização da ciência portuguesa.

Abstract With the arrival of the society of Jesus in Portugal in the 16th century, began to be created in the Crown jesuíticos schools, which subsequently will not only religious purposes; both the children of the poor, and the high nobility, are composed also the students of these institutions. We have as object of study the first public institution to teach Portuguese, Colégio de Santo Antão, being the most respected and important of Lisbon. In February 1553 Societa Iesus initiates inaugural classes of that institution. Demand for registrations was great making necessary another building; When in 1593 begin in the new environment of classes which will be called Colegio de Santo Antão-o-Novo. So, in this context, we propose a brief discussion of the main objectives, characteristics and difficulties of this religious order in the territory cited, as well as aspects regarding implementation, initial objectives and consolidating the teaching Center in question; In addition, we held a discussion of one of the most important lessons of high school: the "Class of the sphere". The first Jesuit institution of public education has grown to become the best science and Astronomy Centre of Portugal. The priests regarded as fundamental to the teachings of that College, math-related aspects, because through this discipline addressed the theory and practice of items such as the telescope, the logarithms, equations, geometry and suchlike. The curricular grids of pre-University Centre included, in addition to the sciences and mathematics, disciplines such as: Latin, grammar, humanities, rhetoric, Moral theology, dogmatic theology and philosophy; considered only to teaching in Portuguese context. Study the College of Santo Antão helps us understand how were considered these innovations in teaching, even if in the case in temporal context Jesuit Portugal in the 16th century. We understand that the College, mainly by innovations with these disciplines, was instrumental in the modernisation of Portuguese science.
