Abstract The present work deals with the construction and development of a low cost refractor telescope for astronomical observations and also as an instrument for learning Mathematics contents of basic education. The telescope is an instrument that extends the ability of human eyes to observe and measure distant objects because of their ability to collect more light from these objects. In this sense, we tried to build a low-cost and good quality instrument, whose main challenge was to minimize the effect of chromatic aberration. In order to demystify the telescope, its internal structure was analyzed and explained to show that people can construct a simple instrument to make their astronomical observations. The result obtained from this research can be used in the classroom as didactic material to study interdisciplinary Physics and Mathematics, contributing to the students' learning in these disciplines. The choice of refractor telescope construction is justified not only by the great mathematical potential that can be exploited using that instrument, but also by this apparatus being essential for the evolution of Science in areas such as Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy. According to market research, the telescope is not an accessible instrument such as a cell phone or a soccer ball, this could be justified if there was a disinterest of people by the same, but it is the opposite, people are very curious to do when you have access to the telescope. The work addresses the phenomenon of refraction and the operation of the objective and ocular lenses that are the main components of the telescope. In order to follow the observations through the telescope and as a resource to learn Astronomy, the Stellarium software will be presented. The operation and construction of the refractor telescope were developed as proposals to be worked in workshops aiming to rescue and stimulate the curiosity of the participants, as well as investigating the contributions to the learning of astronomy and basic concepts of Mathematics in Elementary and Middle School. The intention is to contribute to the initial training of teachers, for which a pilot workshop was developed with students from the Institutional Program of the Initiation to Teaching Grant (PIBID), which was later applied to a state school, the results of which were analyzed.
